UFL II WEEK TWO RESULTS AND REPORTS
Week 2 in the bag and things are starting to become a little clearer, although the league again shows that close games and exciting play are winning out.
HAWKS 25 - 19 Mavericks
The Hawks took another close one, with the reigning champion Mavericks falling to an 0-2 record, despite holding a lead deep into the second half. The scoring opened with Oscar O'Connor getting the Hawks a 6 point lead, Ryan Dawe pulling in the PAT to make it 7-0, but the Mavs then went on a two score spree either side of the half, Ben Remmer, Elijah Hubbard and Miles with the PAT giving them the lead 7-13.
Panashe Gaihai pulled the Hawks back into it, but Luis Shipley restored the 6 point cushion making it 13-19. But that was to be the last time the Mavericks had a lead. Panashe scampered the length of the field to make it level at 19-19, and in the closing moments Gabriel Vassell closed it out for the Hawks to finish 25-19 victors.
MVPs: For the Hawks, Panashe Gahai was the difference, with his long mazy runs. For the Mav's, the outstanding Elijah Hubbard wins their MVP.
DRAGONS 42 - 38 Wolf Pack
The Shootout at the Headingley Corral. This game had it all, both sides of the ball.
The matchup started well, both teams driving patiently and trading blows, Elliott Duffey to Krishan Johnson to give the Dragons the lead. Owen Yarwood to Joe McDonagh doubling up for the TD and PAT to make it 6-7. Duffey to Johnson again, with a long arcing pass and an amazing catch in the end zone, converted by a Duffey run for 2 to make it 14-7. Sam Smith replied, passing to Xavier Richards to make it 14-13, but just before the half the Dragons stamped their authority with a Johnson 20yd run to make it 20-13 at the break.
The Wolf Pack were not happy and went on the attack quickly, Yarwood to Richards again, then McDonagh finding Sam Smith in the corner of the end zone to pull the Pack into a 20-25 lead.
Krishan Johnson took over then, sprinting 20 yards for the TD and converting it himself from 12 yards out to make it 28-25, but the slugfest continued, the Howlers hitting back with a Yarwood to McDonagh touchdown and its now 28-31 to the Pack. Lewis Nicholson was the Duffey target for the Fire Breathers and they were back in the lead, scores racking up in a metronomic manner 34-31 Dragons...... 34-38 Wolf Pack, with McDonagh going the length of the field with 30 seconds to go, Smith to Richards is successful for the 2 pointer and surely that's the game... But no. With 14 seconds left on the clock and the crowd on their feet screaming, Elliott Duffey calmly dropped five steps on a timing pattern and found Krishan Johnson, who then flashed 40 yards to give the Dragons the win, topped off by a Duffey to Sandison pass for the 2 pointer and the finishing score, 42-38..
MVPs: In an amazingly tight and skillful game, the MVPs were as follows:
For the Wolf Pack, Joe McDonagh was sensational. And on the Dragons side, Krishan Johnson was outstanding and Elliott Duffey's calmness which earns them joint MVP for the firebreathers.
