WEEK FIVE RESULTS & REPORTS

GAME OF THE WEEK

Mavericks 27 - 34 Hawks

There was a crackle in the air for this game, with all four teams today with virtually full strength rosters it was clear there would be competition again this week and this tussle was to prove the case.

The Hawks won the toss and elected to defer their options to the second half, so with the ball handed to them by their hosts the Mavericks set about their job of work and it wasn't long until Rookie QB Maksim Ivanov opened the scoring with a mazy 25 Yard run. With Matty Cooper under center though, the Hawks hit back with a perfect drive - pinpoint passes and clever runs were rounded off by a Cooper threading the eye of a needle to find Oscar O'Connor at full speed and we were level 6-6.

But back came the Mavs, Ivanov for the TD and the same combo for the PAT and they had a 13-6 lead. A defensive stand on their own half saw the Mavs get the turnover on downs and Ivanov again punished the Hawks finding Luis Shipley from 12 yards out to run in the TD after the catch. Matty Cooper stepped up again though, and in the dying seconds of the half found O'Connor for the TD and the PAT pass to Panashe Gaihai made the score a more respectable 19 - 13 to the Mavs and the crowd was wondering if a shock was on the books.

A halftime talk from HC's Shaw and Jones seemed to instill a new determination for the Hawks. 21 unanswered points followed....

Cooper to Thompson - TD, Cooper to O'Connor PAT and the Hawks were up 20-19. The Mavs drove back but Panashe Gaihai stepped up and intercepted an Ivanov pass and Cooper was back in the saddle. Another flawless drive saw Cooper scamper into the endzone then throw the PAT to O'Connor and it was 27 - 19. Finally, Cooper's spiral to Panashe broke the Hawks' hearts and his fifth scoring pass to Oscar O'Connor gave them 34 points. A final drive into time expired saw Ivanov run in a TD and find Ben Remmer for the 2PAT, but it was all over - the Hawks 34 - 27 winners.
